Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord is a 2022 fantasy tactical RPG under Compile Heart's brand for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. It is a spin off of Fairy Fencer F ADVENT DARK FORCE, set in an alternate timeline before Pippin and Ethel join the party.
Gameplay[]
Unlike the original game, Refrain Chord is a tactical RPG, similar to Hyperdevotion Noire, a spin-off of the Neptunia series, that was also developed by Sting.
Plot[]
Long ago, the people were given knowledge by the Goddess, and civilization flourished. They built towers stretching toward the heavens, and a weapon so powerful, they could pierce the gods themselves.
However, that civilization was decimated shortly after a violent conflict between the Goddess and the Vile God. Ages have passed since then. Our story begins with a young man named Fang who had become a Fencer, a swordsman who has the ability to wield a special weapon imbued with a Fairy known as a Fury. Along with his companions, Fang is on a journey to find the Furies, and resurrect the Goddess.
One day, he encounters a woman who can save people with her song, and another who can brainwash people with her song. Along with the mysterious power of the women who call themselves Muses, Fang's destiny begins to unfold...
Characters[]
- Fang
- Voiced by: Ryōta Ōsaka
A lazy Fencer whose only thoughts in life are how he can avoid any sort of work, and what's for dinner. He's helping his Fairy partner, Eryn, regain her memories by collecting Furies. Despite his foul mouth and general lack of sophistication, his direct nature gives him the ability to bring people together.
- Tiara
- Voiced by: Kaori Ishihara
A prim and proper young lady Fencer who at times tends to border on domineering. She seems to enjoy verbal abuse and often forgets herself when she gets going. She has a strong desire to revive the Goddess that seems to have something to do with her past, which is something she almost never talks about. She can enter The Beyond, the place where the Goddess and Vile God are sealed away.
- Ibfreet
- Voiced by: Shouma Yamamoto
A young man who was educated at the Dorfa Fencer Training Institute. Though his ability to become a Fencer wasn't recognized until later, Dorfa kept him around due to his incredible skills as an assassin. Quick and flexible, he's extremely dangerous with concealed weapons. He seems to have some kind of history with Zagi.
- Rinne
- Voiced by: Kaede Hondo
The result of Dorfa's research to create the world's first Arti-Fencer. Equipped on her arm is the very first False Fury, which has the same power as a naturally occurring one. Despite her young appearance, she has surprisingly cold eyes. The Fairy she travels with looks just like her and he calls her "brother"...
- Harley
- Voiced by: Nao Toyama
A Fencer and Fairyologist. While Harley can be a bit of a homebody and tends to lock herself up in her room to do research, all that changes as soon as she catches wind of rumors about ancient Fairies or research materials. She's knowledgeable not only about Fairies, but also medicine and engineering. Despite her vast knowledge, she tends to be sloppy, lazy, and totally incapable of taking care of herself. She's a terrible role model.
- Galdo
- Voiced by: Takatsugu Awazu
Formerly a Dorfa Fencer under Zenke's command, he came to deeply admire Fang when Fang put a stop to Zenke's brutality. Soon thereafter, he decided to join Fang and the others. While he can be hot-blooded and easily excitable, he's also very friendly and good-natured. He speaks with a thick accent from a place that's clearly not Zelwinds...
Despite no longer being associated with Dorfa, she still attacks Fang and the others at every opportunity. The only word that comes out of her mouth is "kill" but her Fairy partner, Karin, often translates for her. She was raised at a Fencer Training Institute.
- Sherman
- Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi
A perfectionist Fencer who dreams of world peace. Fastidious to a fault, he has a penchant for the beautiful, pure, and righteous. He's willing to cut down anything he judges as evil, which can occasionally cause him to go to extremes out of a desire to do what is right. Not afraid to use flowery language and indulge in poetry, he's the perfect image of a White Knight.
- Bernard
- Voiced by: Kohei Murakami
He is Dorfa's vice president and an aide who supports the star. While he has the brain to support Dorfa's management, he is also a top-notch fencer, and there are rumors that he is stronger than the Four Heavenly Kings. He seems to have some kind of purpose in belonging to Dorfa.
- Apollonius
- Voiced by: Takuya Satō
Among the Four Heavenly Kings of Dorfa, he is a fencer who is the most skilled in swordsmanship and martial arts. In order to perfect Bushido, he trains every day and hopes to fight against strong opponents. He is a clumsy warrior with an old-fashioned way of thinking and a stubborn and single-minded personality. He leaves behind his younger sister named Emily in his hometown.
- Marianna
- Voiced by: Rui Tanabe
A fencer who is one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Dorfa and is in charge of the welfare department. She is passionate about charity work, such as running an orphanage, and feels indebted to Dorfa for supporting her activities. She has the temperament of a young lady and accepts Zagi and other members of the Marianna Guard as a matter of course.
- Zenke
- Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka
Dorfa's Four Heavenly Kings. He is a cruel and outlaw fencer. He is the opposite of Apollonius; he takes more pleasure in torturing the weak than in fighting the strong. He was defeated by Fang in Solaru. This timeline differens from original game, in which he was killed by Fang rather than just injured.
Although he is a fencer who is counted as one of Dorfa's Four Heavenly Kings, he doesn't seem to want to fight much. He is good at desk work and is a middle manager who works as an internal coordinator. He has a wife and three kids and still has a mortgage on his house. As a result, he is constantly afraid of being laid off and losing his bonus.
- Pippin
- Voiced by: Asami Shimoda
Although he is a mysterious life form, he is extremely common sense and seems to be a fencer. He is preachy and talks a lot. He talks like an old man, but the truth is unknown. However, his sword and martial arts skills are undeniable. Apparently he practices Zen to improve his concentration.
- Noie
- Voiced by: Takashi Hagino
- Eryn
- Voiced by: Rumi Ōkubo
Fang's Fairy partner. Although she has amnesia, she does know that her purpose is to revive the Goddess, something Fang is helping her do by collecting Furies. She and Tiara often bicker over trivial matters, but they're usually united in their annoyance with Fang.
- Cui
- Voiced by: Arisa Noto
The little animal that barks "cui, cui!" is Tiara's Fairy partner. Although it is unable to converse with humans, Tiara seems to be able to understand it. On top of that, it's also able to converse with other animal-type Fairies. Normally upstanding, Cui sometimes like to pull mischievous pranks.
- Sui
- Voiced by: Keito Okuyama
Ibfreet's Fairy partner. Until it was freed by Ibfreet, it drove all who touched its Fury mad. It has the appearance of a pure white snake, and it eats all of its food in one single swallow. When it eats, it eats a lot, which really drives up the food costs.
- Lenne
- Voiced by: Misato Murai
An Arti-Fairy who is fused with Rinne through the False Fury equipped to him. He gives Rinne the power to be an Arti-Fencer. Rinne calls him "his real blood-related brother," but...
- Bahus
- Voiced by: Masaki Terosoma
Harley's Fairy partner. At first glance he appears to be a man of brute force, but he's actually quite the docile housekeeper. Skilled at both cooking and cleaning, he's very particular about the appearance and taste of the sweets and pastries he makes. Although he always says he doesn't like children, he cooks nothing but kid-friendly foods.
- Marissa
- Voiced by: Kayano Ide
Galdo's Fairy partner. The polar opposite of Galdo's boisterous personality, she's quite calm and composed. She acts as a kind of mother and caretaker not only to Galdo, but to everyone in the group. Despite her calm exterior, she'd drop everything to do anything for Galdo.
- Karin
- Voiced by: Ayaka Oohashi
Ethel's Fairy partner and interpreter of her "kill-kill" language. She's deeply concerned with Ethel's poor social skills from the dreadful upbringing she had at the Fencer Institute. Calm and composed, she's very good at reading the mood of any situation, but she can also be unexpectedly excitable.
- Ryushin
- Voiced by: Daiki Nakamura
A robotic Fairy whose words are straightforward, and whose actions are always rational and precise. He fully trusts Sherman, his Fencer partner, and is deeply devoted to supporting him. He often tries to crack jokes, but they often don't land because of his normally serious nature and robotic voice.
- Seguro
- Voiced by: Toshifumi Maeda
Apollones' partner fairy. He has the appearance of a giant, strong-looking dragon and is highly capable of fighting, but his hobby is walking. However, he gets scared of people when he walks during the day, so he only goes out after dark or in the morning.
- Khalara
- Voiced by: Toyota Moe
Marianna's partner fairy. She is small and round, and looks cute at first glance, but upon closer inspection, she has devilish horns, wings, and a tail. Although she speaks in a childish manner, she uses cruel words lightly and lacks a sense of ethics. Those who oppose Marianna look down on her, calling her a ``lower creature.
- Vivian
- Voiced by: Nanako Yasuda
Paiga's partner, a half-beast-type fairy with large mouse-like ears. She spend more time scolding Paiga than fighting. She always looks at Paiga with a sigh as he tries his best to avoid battles and hassles as much as possible.
A humanoid fairy who looks and acts like a butler who follows Pippin. He is often mistaken for a fencer and Pippin for a fairy. His demeanor is soft and elegant, and at first glance he always seems to value Pippin, but he sometimes treats Pippin roughly, such as by making tea without listening to Pippin while he is speaking, or just smiling when Pippin is surrounded by others.
- Lola
- Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi
- Fleur
- Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa
A Muse that the group meets while pursuing Dorfa. She's said to be able to imbue her songs with power and grant special skills to herself and those around her, such as the ability to heal wounds or even brainwash others. She can be a bit strange at times, and her understanding of the world is very limited. She loves Al as though he were her father.
- Glace
- Voiced by: Yoko Hikasa
- Al
- Voiced by: Takashi Kondō
Fleur's partner. Being somewhat of a scientist himself, he and Harley get along very well. He is knowledgeable, caring, and easygoing, but he tends to lose himself in his work when he gets interested in something and has a bad habit of running off. He wears a singular goggle on his right eye due to his very poor vision.
- A.J.
- Voiced by: Yūki Fujiwara
High spirited and attracted to a pretty face regardless of gender. They like beautiful things and love to hear the latest juicy gossip. Despite their gaudy appearance, they love to cook healthy, modestly flavored Japanese food. A.J. and Bahus, who is prone to cooking more fatty Western foods, are bitter enemies.
- Hanagata
- Voiced by: Gentoku
The president of "Dorfa", the largest Zelwinds company and one of the world's leading companies and he's not a fencer. At first glance, he seems to be an excellent company with everything from cradle to grave, including food, home appliances, and charity work, but behind the scenes, he seems to be plotting something by hiring powerful fencers and gathering Furies from all over the world.
- Zagi
- Voiced by: Kensho Ono
From an early age, he was raised in a fencer training institution directly under Dorfa, but he did not have the qualities to be a fencer, and when he was fired, he was picked up by Marianna. From then on, he worshiped Marianna and was willing to lay down his life for her. He's not a fencer, but he's good with a sword. He always carries Marianna's bromide in his pocket.
- Junown
